Holy sh*t balls…they have to be kidding! Unfortunately it seems as though they are not! The "Vintner’s Vessel" (as it has been so aptly named) will most certainly appeal to anyone with an affinity for fine wines (and disturbing furniture). This exquisite piece of pine craftsmanship will make itself extremely useful during your lifetime (and after). The moment you kick the bucket, the interior framework can be slid out to be re-assembled as a free-standing…

Do you think your palate has changed much in the last few years? I’m not talking about over the last 10 years, but just the last 2-3? Needless-to-say, you’re going to notice a change over the last 10+, but I’m guessing that’s more from a budgetary standpoint than it is from one of taste. Back in college for example; you probably couldn’t afford to drink the wines you are today (not that you probably didn’t…

Cabernet vines dominate the Napa Valley landscape, but everyone (I assume) knows that! What often gets overlooked is that (given half the chance) Napa can still do a decent job with Pinot Noir; even though Sonoma, Willamette (Oregon), and Carneros hog most of the limelight. Now don’t get me wrong, the Pinot’s coming out of “the Valley” are stylistically very different than those hailing from the cooler aforementioned regions; producing wines which are much more…

So I was going through my Google Analytics the other day, checking into some of the back-end data, looking at some of the most popular search keywords that lead people to wind up at this website etc etc etc…all very boring! I have a fairly short attention-span, and so after a while, I thought it would be interesting to take a look at some of the “long tail” search results I receive. These are search…

San Francisco Restaurants Demand Standard 25% Tip. It’s a question regularly asked by baffled diners all over the world: ‘How much should I tip’? When Tutankhamun’s tomb was opened in 1922; the wine jars buried with him were labeled with the year, the name of the winemaker, and comments such as “very good wine.” The labels were reportedly so specific that they could actually meet modern wine labeling laws of several countries.

Now we’re getting nerdy!!! “Brix” is the term used to designate the percentage of sugar in grapes before fermentation. If you divide a Brix number by 2 and add 1, you will be given roughly half that amount in alcohol. Therefore, grapes harvested at 24° Brix will be converted by yeast to 13% alcohol, more or less, depending on the type of yeast used. Congratulations! You are now one step closer to understanding wine tech-sheets!

Grape 100% Tempranillo [TEM-pruh-NEE-yo] Facts This is another bottle from Spanish Wine God Jorge Ordonez. See yesterday’s review on Can Blau for a little more about him… The Tempranillo grape is native to Spain and is arguably one of the most “noble” of all Spanish varietals. The grapes going into the Volver are harvested from a small 72 acre vineyard that were planted in 1967. The wine is fermented in its barrel,…

Grapes Mazuelo 40%, Syrah 40% Garnacha 20% Facts I’ve been on a bit of a Jorge Ordonez (the importer of this wine) kick lately! As the “bringer-inner” (I just made up that term) of some of the best Spanish wines in the U.S, he’s been fighting to help the wines of Spain wines out of obscurity since 1987. When looking at a bottle of Spanish wine, look for the Jorge Ordoñez importer information on the…
