The Rule of Thumb

The rule of thumb: you're doing it wrong!Before thermometers were invented, winemakers and brewers would dip a thumb or finger into the liquid to determine the ideal temperature, either too hot or too cold, for adding yeast. That is supposedly where we get the phrase "rule of thumb."
